Delores Florence, 86, of Liberty City, Texas, passed away on April 2, 2024. She was born on September 19, 1937, in Overton, Texas to the late Claude Gaines and Mattie Gee Burton. She was raised in Overton, Texas and a graduate of Overton High School. After graduating from business school, she married the love of her life, our daddy, James Vernon Florence, also of Overton, Texas.
Delores was affectionately known as Peewee and Memaw. She was a homemaker extraordinaire, dedicating her whole life to her family. Indeed, this scripture describes our Mama: “Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her” Proverbs 31:28. Her door was always open, and one could count on being welcomed with a cup of coffee, a glass of Kool-Aid, or a grilled cheese sandwich (maybe just a little on the burnt side!). Memaw had a great sense of humor. She was the best grandmother and great-grandmother ever there was. She set the bar high as a wife and mother. She loved well, and she was well loved.
Delores was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and five great-grandchildren. She is survived by her son, Bud Wallace (Sam) Florence (wife Karen Florence), Dr. James Preston (Jay) Florence (wife Melissa Florence), and Becky Harber (husband Frank Harber). Grandchildren: Preston (Krystal), Brandon (Jonetta), Victoria (Trey), Graham, Gabrielle (Brandon H.), Joshua, Hunter, Belle, Hannah. Great-grandchildren: Khloe, Hudson, Athena.
Her celebration service will be held at Cottle Funeral Home in Troup, Texas on Saturday, April 27, 2024, with visitation at noon and service at 1:00 pm. Son-in-law, Dr. Frank Harber will officiate. In honor of Memaw, family and guests are welcome to wear her favorite color- Red.
